Foundation #7: Emotional Equilibrium

emotions foundations

In our pursuit of holistic well-being, it is crucial to recognize the impact of emotions on our physical health. Cultivating emotional balance and practicing temperance can lead to numerous benefits for both mind and body. In this blog, we will explore the profound connection between emotions and physical well-being, highlighting the importance of emotional release and providing insights on how to live your best life by embracing emotional well-being.

Emotions are often described as "energy in motion." They are meant to be experienced and then allowed to flow out of our system. Holding onto emotions can cause trauma to the body, affecting our overall health and vitality. By practicing temperance and moderation in our actions, thoughts, and feelings, we can learn to act consciously rather than reacting impulsively to emotional triggers. It is important to take a moment in any situation and act, instead of react. When you hand over control of your emotions to the circumstances that life gives you, you move through life on autopilot, simply reacting without thought. If good things happen to you, you have a good response and vice versa. If you simply react to life, you’ll become trapped on an emotional rollercoaster that never stops.

Optimistic individuals reap significant health benefits. Studies have shown that optimists are 50% less likely to require post-surgery hospitalization, have better coping mechanisms when faced with disease, are 3x less likely to develop hypertension and heart disease, and experience fewer viral infections. They also exhibit lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and fewer inflammatory markers in their bodies. Optimists have fewer episodes of learned helplessness, can prevent or resolve issues more effectively, and do not let their conditions or diagnoses define them. They tend to encounter fewer negative events in life and enjoy increased social support and encouragement.

Tips to Living an Optimistic Life:

  • Keep a gratitude journal.
  • Focus on finding solutions instead of dwelling on problems.
  • Look for the good in every situation.
  • Find something to look forward to each day.
  • Practice Mindfulness: sit and focus on the present moment- the things you see, hear, etc.
  • Identify your thoughts- replace negative ones with positive ones.

Emotional well-being has a profound impact on our physical bodies. It is not uncommon for certain physical ailments to have emotional roots. Understanding these connections can provide valuable insights into our overall health. For instance, if applying ice doesn't help an injury but heat does, it could indicate an emotional component. Back pain may be linked to fear, restless legs to resentment, constipation to feeling stuck, shallow breathing to grief, and heart palpitations to excess joy or shock. Additionally, conditions like fibromyalgia have been associated with chronic childhood stress and conflicts with parents.

So how do we take care of these trapped emotions and learn to release them?
