Foundation #5: Move to Thrive
In our modern world, where sitting often takes precedence, the value of physical activity is often sidelined. Our parents and grandparents walked to school- uphill both ways in the snow 😉- while most of us drive to school or work to then sit the rest of the day and drive home. Our daily lives just are not as naturally active as they used to be, leading to health concerns and rising obesity rates. In fact, did you know that only 1 in 3 children and less than 5% of adults engage in daily exercise? Our screen time, which is on average 7-8 hours a day, adds to this, resulting in doubled obesity rates among adults and quadrupled rates in 6 to 11-year-olds.
But the answer to these challenges is simple: make time for regular exercise. Let's explore why it matters and the benefits it brings:
1. A Stronger Heart: Exercise makes our heart stronger, improving blood circulation and reducing heart disease risks.
2. Boosting Mood: Exercise releases feel-good hormones, helping to fight anxiety and depression.
3. Sharp Mind, Strong Body: Exercise enhances memory, focus, physical strength, and endurance.
4. Stronger Bones: Weight-bearing exercises keep bones healthy and prevent issues like osteoporosis.
5. Better Balance: Exercise improves flexibility, mobility, and balance, lowering the risk of falls and injuries.
6. Sound Sleep: Regular physical activity improves sleep quality and duration, ensuring better rest.
7. Stress Relief: Exercise naturally reduces stress, lowering stress-hormones and bringing calmness and relaxation.
Beyond these benefits, exercise helps our body repair itself and remove toxins. It stimulates the removal of old cells and encourages sweating, which is a way our body detoxifies. Exercise also boosts the creation of mitochondria, which helps prevent diseases and combat aging.
Make exercise enjoyable by including a mix of cardiovascular, strength, and flexibility exercises. Set achievable goals like walking outdoors three times a week for 45 minutes. Even if you have limitations, alternatives like dry skin brushing, infrared sauna, massages, and stretching can help.
Exercise isn't just a routine—it's a path to better health and vitality. 10 minutes of exercise every day will have more benefits than no minutes! By understanding its importance and embracing its rewards, we take control of our well-being. Let's prioritize movement, find joy in it, and experience the transformation it offers. Remember, it starts with one step. Are you ready to begin?
